Here

This Christmas

I’m on the edge of something.

Something beautiful,

Something hidden,

Something that is everything,

Here.

I’m on the edge of uncovering,

That this Christ

This Christ,

Born of an unwed mother,

Who came from the meekest of women and for even the most desolate of women,

Did come here.

And thus this Christmas I realize

That finding space for God to be felt

In all of the nooks and crannies of Christmas

Is a draught worth toasting.

And that we,

We who ran and bled so that others could walk

We who missed the lighting of the candle due to the shame we carried,

We multitudes who did not win in Helen’s war,

We come out clean in the wash

– Cleaned by the blood spilled by Christ.

And what’s more, it does not matter that

We forgot to light the candle –

Because, as we so sweetly find, already

 bear the light of Christ.

And thus with this gift this Christmas,

Has come the inevitability of finding goodness,

In the strangest of places.

And so as the deeper gifts unfold to me,

This precious Christmas,

I am wide-eyed and watching by nightfall for what is already mine;

A destiny that cannot be interposed,

The grace for imperfections,

A rest for the weariest times,

A light for the heart that knows God

Filial love for those fellow seekers on the journey

And a release from all we carry.

And with these gifts,

Comes an awareness,

That this Christmas,

I will be as strong as I am,

As loving as I am,

As joyful as I am,

And as beloved as I already am.

And so finally (breath)

This Christmas,

I feel

The best gifts are already,

Here.

Here for us to both deliver and to receive,

Upwrapped, glowing,

And joyfully shared with those who would seek

Them as well.

Here, by the heart of God.
